My Bio

As a twenty-six year felony prosecutor whose work focused on child physical and sexual abuse, adult sex cases, family violence from assault up to capital murder and human trafficking, I have spent my career asking juries to hold offenders accountable and ensuring the safety of communities across Texas. I believe in the value of all people and that the criminal justice system should reflect that value. I also believe in honoring the U.S. and Texas Constitution by upholding the rights of every person who interacts with the justice system, regardless of who they are or where they come from. My promise to the people of Hays County is that as your next District Attorney my team and I will assess every case individually on the facts and the applicable law before making prosecutorial decisions, and we will not let money, power, position, race, citizenship or gender play a role in that decision-making. I believe that no one is above the law and no one is below it.

My Key Issues

Trust through Transparency

How many sexual assaults were dismissed in the last 2.5 years? Are we treating serious crime the same way across neighborhoods? Is race, ethnicity, gender or immigration status making a difference in how we resolve cases? These are all good questions, and they deserve answers based on facts and data. Right now, the Hays County District Attorney’s office operates like a black box. Information comes in but very little goes back to the public. Well, I say trust has to go both ways. I’m Kirsta Melton and I’m running for District Attorney because you deserve to understand the safety decisions being made in our community. I’m committed to providing that information and sharing it in a consistent and understandable format that allows us to improve capacity and safety while maximizing fairness.

Importance of Integrity

  1. We have grown accustomed to leaders who take, who exploit their offices and the people around them for their own personal gain—money, luxury, status and power, regardless of the price paid by others. Sounds very similar to the criminals I have prosecuted my entire career—selfishness above all else. Enough is enough. Leaders should serve and sacrifice for the good of others. I’m Kirsta Melton and as your next District Attorney I promise to stand on the side of the vulnerable and disenfranchised, to protect instead of exploit, and to serve others instead of self-serve.

Power of Professionalism

  1. Competence is an underrated skill right now. Everyday, there’s another example of someone holding a job they aren’t equipped to have and the consequences that flow from that. Lack of competence and professionalism in the justice system results in criminals going free and innocent people incarcerated. It destroys the integrity of the system and our faith in it. I’m Kirsta Melton, a 25-year prosecutor with a reputation for excellence and integrity and I’m running for Hays County District Attorney because I’m committed to making justice work for everyone.
